Medicare When You Move: Plan Changes During 2026 Open Enrollment
Moving this fall on Medicare? How the moving window works, how it fits with Open Enrollment and which address updates keep coverage on track.
In this article 10 sections
Medicare when you move depends on your coverage type. Original Medicare works anywhere in the country, so a move changes nothing. A Medicare Advantage or Part D drug plan is tied to a service area, so moving out of it opens a special window to switch. That window starts when you move and runs two full months after.
Many downsizers move in the fall, right as Medicare's annual Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7. That timing creates questions.
Should you pick a 2027 plan for the old address or the new one? Does a move give you extra time? What happens if you do nothing?
This guide is for people on Medicare who are moving to a new town or state in the next few months. It covers which plans are affected, the moving window, how it fits with Open Enrollment, and the address updates to make. Midlife Simplicity covers relocation, renting and the paperwork in between, in small ordered steps.
It explains the process and is not medical or insurance advice. Facts were checked against Medicare.gov and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as of October 19, 2026.
Does Moving Change Your Medicare Coverage?
It depends on your plan. Original Medicare, Parts A and B, is national, so doctors who accept Medicare anywhere will see you. Medicare Advantage plans and stand-alone Part D drug plans sell coverage by county or region. If your new home is outside that area, you need a new plan.
Moving within the same area usually changes nothing. The exception is when your new address gives you plan options you did not have before. Medicare treats that as a reason to switch too.
The stakes are real for people on Advantage plans. Many use local networks of doctors and hospitals. A plan that covered your old town well may have few or no in-network doctors 300 miles away, even if it technically still covers you.
The Special Enrollment Period for Moving
Medicare gives people who move a special enrollment period, often called an SEP. According to Medicare.gov's page on special enrollment periods, your chance to switch begins when you move and lasts for two full months after.
You can start earlier. If you tell your plan before you move, the window opens the month before the month you move. That lets you line up new coverage to start close to moving day.
Doing nothing has a cost. Medicare.gov says that if you leave your Advantage plan's area and do not join a new one, you will be put in Original Medicare when the old plan drops you. You could lose drug coverage in the gap if your Advantage plan included it.
Moving into or out of a nursing home or rehabilitation hospital has its own window. It lasts as long as you live there and for two full months after you leave.
Moving During Medicare Open Enrollment in 2026
Open Enrollment and the moving window can overlap this fall. Medicare's guide to joining a health or drug plan lists Open Enrollment as October 15 to December 7. Changes made then take effect January 1.
The table below shows which window fits common fall moving situations.
| Your situation | Window to use | When coverage starts |
|---|---|---|
| Moving in November, same plan area | Open Enrollment, if you want a change | January 1, 2027 |
| Moving in November, new state | Moving SEP, starting the month before | Generally the first of the month after you enroll |
| Moving in January 2027, new state | Moving SEP | Generally the first of the month after you enroll |
| Moved, new Advantage plan disappoints | Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 to March 31 | First of the month after the plan gets your request |
One trap catches people moving in early January. If you choose a 2027 plan for your old address during Open Enrollment, you will need to switch again after the move. If the move date is firm, wait and use the moving window for the new area instead.
At Midlife Simplicity, we suggest writing three dates on one page: your closing or lease start, your moving day and the date your current plan's area ends for you. Plan decisions get much easier once those are side by side.
What 2027 Medicare Plans Look Like
Plan choice is broad in most of the country. CMS said in its September 28, 2026 release on 2027 plans that 97% of people with Medicare will have access to 10 or more Advantage plans.
The CMS release also projected costs. The average monthly Advantage premium is expected to fall from $14.37 to $12.00 in 2027. The average stand-alone Part D premium is expected to rise slightly, from $35.09 to $36.
Averages hide wide local differences. A plan that costs nothing in one county can carry a premium one state over. Compare plans using your new ZIP code, not your old one.
Finding Doctors and Pharmacies Before You Move
A cheap plan is no bargain if your doctors are out of network. Checking the network first saves a second switch later. Here is the order we suggest:
- List your current doctors, specialists, prescriptions and preferred pharmacy.
- Ask your doctors for referrals to colleagues near the new address.
- Search Medicare's plan finder using the new ZIP code.
- Check that your prescriptions are on each plan's drug list.
- Call two or three new doctors' offices to confirm they take the plan.
- Request copies of your medical records before your last appointment.
Refill prescriptions before moving week. A 90-day supply gives you room while you settle in with a new pharmacy.
New patients sometimes wait weeks for a first appointment, especially with specialists. Book a primary care visit as soon as the new plan is confirmed.
Medigap and Employer Coverage When You Relocate
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also called Medigap, works differently from Advantage plans. It pays some costs Original Medicare leaves behind. Because Original Medicare is national, your Medigap policy generally keeps working after a move.
The premium may change, though. Insurers price Medigap by location, and some states have their own rules. Call your insurer before the move and ask how the new address affects the price.
Retiree coverage from a former employer or union is another layer. Some plans are tied to a region. Ask the plan administrator before you move whether coverage follows you.
Common Mistakes When Moving on Medicare
Most problems come from timing, not from the rules themselves. These are the mistakes that show up most often for people moving on Medicare:
- Letting the two-month window pass and landing in Original Medicare without drug coverage.
- Picking a plan by premium alone and finding your doctors are out of network.
- Updating the address with the plan but not with Social Security.
- Assuming a snowbird stay counts as a move, when your main home has not changed.
- Forgetting that a drug plan's list of covered medicines can differ by region.
Late drug coverage can also cost you over time. Medicare charges a lasting penalty in some cases if you go without creditable drug coverage for 63 days or more in a row. Choosing a new drug plan inside the moving window avoids that risk.
Snowbirds deserve a note of their own. Splitting the year between two homes is not the same as moving. Advantage plans have rules on how long you can be outside the service area, so check yours before a long winter away.
Moving Back to the United States
Some retirees return from years abroad to be near family. Medicare.gov's special enrollment page covers this case too. You can join an Advantage or drug plan for two full months after the month you move back to the U.S.
Use that window carefully. If you return in December, coverage choices for 2027 and the special window can overlap, so check both before you pick.
Address Updates That Keep Medicare Working
Medicare uses the address on file with Social Security. Update it with the Social Security Administration as soon as you have a firm new address, so plan notices and your Medicare card reach you.
Then tell your Advantage or drug plan, your Medigap insurer and your pharmacy. Our change of address checklist lists the other agencies and accounts to update in the same sitting.
If you are renting first while you get to know the new town, the timing works in your favor. A lease start date gives you a firm move date for the special enrollment window. Our guide on how to negotiate rent and concessions after selling covers setting that date.
Your Next Step
Medicare when you move comes down to one question: is your plan tied to where you live? If you have Original Medicare, your coverage moves with you. If you have an Advantage or drug plan, use the moving window to pick a plan for your new address, starting the month before you move.
This week, write down your move date and check whether your current plan covers the new ZIP code.
